Description

Size: 6ft 9in x 4ft 6in (205 x 138cm)
Antique Caucasian Zejwa village rug of classic design.
4th quarter 19th century
Zejwa village is about 20km south of the town of Kuba in the eastern Caucasus. Rugs from this village are woven with a very distinctive serrated edge medallion design, they are one of the less common of the Caucasian village rugs.
This example is very closely related to the example published and discussed on page 305 of 'Oriental rugs Volume 1, Caucasian' by Ian Bennett. The design and border are almost identical to the published example which Ian Bennett describes as 'The greatest example of it's type that I have seen', and dates it to the 2nd half of the 19th century.
The Colour palette of my example is excellent with the unusual use of green, the drawing of the border is very pleasing.
good condition, even wear with medium pile.
I have not washed the rug, this is included in the price if required.
