Size: 10ft 4in x 5ft 10in (316 x 179cm).
Antique Caucasian Kazak rug or small carpet, with repeat octogen medallion design.
Circa 1900.
An interesting and scarce Kazak rug, a related example is published in 'Oriental Rugs Vol 1 Caucasian' by Ian Bennett, page 141, plate 154. Bennett suggests that whilst the Gendje region is the most likely origin, it is possible that the rugs could be from the Karabagh region, due to design elements that are related to Chelaberd 'eagle' kayak rugs.
The example offered here has three vertical rows of seven linked octogens, on a dark indigo blue ground. The border design is also associated with rugs from Gendje. This is a striking large size furnishing rug, that will make a statement wherever it is used.
The rug is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.
