Old / vintage Uzbek Samarkand suzani.
1st half 20th century.
Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.
This example is probably from Samarkand and it features large multi coloured solar discs entwined in a green leafy vine. The suzani has been embroidered in six strips, silk twist work on a ivory hand woven linen / cotton ground.
The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and a few scattered small old stains, the suzani is not backed.
The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover.
