Antique Khamseh tribal kelleh or Khan carpet of exceptional design.
Circa 1880.
This is a scare example of a Khamseh tribal kelleh or Khan carpet, made either for a tribal Khan as an audience carpet or as a special commission for a notable property.
The carpet is of fine weave for its size, it has a single row of ten ivory ground latch hook linked medallions, each medallion contains pecking chickens and floral rosettes. The most outstanding feature of this carpet is the field, every inch is covered with small tribal designs of birds, animals, tribal devices and a number of people. The inner border is of pecking chickens and the main border is of a classic Khamseh design.
The Carpet has even wear with medium pile, slightly heavier wear in places, the wool quality and colours are outstanding. There are a number of professional repairs to the carpet that were carried out recently in Turkey, the carpet is now offered in showroom condition. The carpet is also of a very useful large country house hall way size.
The carpet has been hand washed and is ready for use or display. The carpet is suitable for normal domestic use.
A scarce carpet of truly outstanding design.
