Vintage Uzbek Samarkand suzani, silk embroidery on an ivory cotton ground.
Mid 20th century.
Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.
This example is probably from Samarkand and it features large multi coloured solar discs entwined in a green leafy vine to the borders with a large vine running through the main field with many small floral elements.
The condition is excellent with only very slight wear, the suzani is backed with block printed cotton in a floral boteh design.
The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover.
