Description
Size: 8ft 6in x 6ft 0in (260 x 184cm).Antique Afghan or Russian Ersari Turkmen ensi of traditional design.
Circa 1920.
Ensi were door hangings used to cover the entrance to a yurt, although this example may have been made for floor use.
This example is woven with a traditional Ersari design; the four panels in the middle are said to be the windows to Paradise, these are filled with bird heads. The ensi is unusual in its weave, this may point to an Afghan origin or quite possibly it was made in Turkmenistan under Russian influence for the Russian market.
The ensi is in good condition with even wear and medium pile, there is slight colour run in places, this is reflected in the price.
