Size: 7ft 0in x 4ft 9in (214 x 146cm).Vintage Uzbek Bukhara region suzani.
Circa 1930
Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.
This example is probably from Bukhara and it features a floral lattice design to the field with a border of large solar discs. The suzani is embroidered in silk twist work on a ivory hand woven cotton ground.
The condition is excellent with only very slight wear, the suzani is not backed.
The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover or would make a great wall hanging.
