Antique Anatolian Kayseri 'art silk' prayer rug, beautifully drawn with a traditional Turkish mosque prayer design.
Circa 1920/30.
'Art Silk' is a widely accepted term for cotton that has been mercerised, this is a treatment process that strengthens the cotton and gives it the characteristics of silk; only a detailed test process can distinguish mercerised cotton from real silk. Beautiful rugs using this process have been made since the end of the 19th century. This enables you to buy a rug that looks like silk at a fraction of the price of real silk.
