Description

Size: 5ft 6in x 3ft 9in (167 x 115cm).
Antique Uzbek Bokhara 'nim' suzani.
Circa 1850.
Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.
This small example is known as a 'nim' suzani, which translated means half size. It is from Bukhara and features large multi coloured flowers entwined in a green leafy vine. The suzani has been embroidered in three strips.
The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, the suzani has a fine cotton backing printed with a paisley design.
The suzani is ready for display.
