Description

Size: 1ft 8in x 1ft 1in (52 x 33cm).
Antique salt-bag by the Quchan Kurd nomads of north-east Persia.
Circa 1900.
This is a superb example of Kordi salt-bag in soumak work with a finely detailed banded design. The salt-bag has a wonderful array of colours and has a striped plain weave back. Salt-bags were used by the nomads to store and carry rock salt, both for their own use and for their animals; salt was a very valuable item and it therefore deserved to be stored in these beautiful bags which are usually so tightly woven as to be almost waterproof.
The salt bag is in excellent condition with very slight even wear.
The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display.
