Description

Size: 7ft 10in x 3ft 11in (240 x 119cm).
Antique Caucasian Karabagh region rug with scarce striped boteh design.
Circa 1890.
A good Karabagh rug that belongs to a small group of weavings that have a striped boteh design and a simple floral border. The three stripes contain floral boteh within a meandering angular vine, separated by floral stripes similar to the borders. The colour palette, especially the dark cochineal pink in the central stripe is typical of the Karabagh region. This design is also found in rugs woven in Sivas, Turkey during the 19th century, it is considered that the weavers were Armenians living in Sivas.
A prayer rug with the same design is illustrated by Ian Bennett, in 'Oriental Rugs Volume 1 - Caucasian' page 112, plate 108. Another is discussed in Ralph Kaffel, 'Caucasian Prayer Rugs' page 71, plate 27.
The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.
