Description

Size: 20ft 8in x 10ft 5in (630 x 317cm).
Antique Afghan Ersari Turkmen carpet with traditional Ersari large gul design of exceptional large size and quality.
Circa 1900.
The carpet has four vertical rows of thirteen large Ersari octagonal guls; the guls show that the carpet was woven by the Sulayman sub tribe of the Ersari in the Andkhoy region of northern Afghanistan. The carpet is of a superb warm madder red colour with the design in indigo blue. The carpet has multiple borders of traditional designs.
The carpet is of such a large size that it is probable that the carpet was specially commissioned as an audience carpet or for use in a specific room; it is without doubt a very special carpet and was made to the highest possible quality.
The carpet is in near perfect condition with very slight even wear and full pile, note the long original kilims at both ends.
The carpet is suitable for heavy domestic floor use and would grace a large living room or a dining room with a large refectory style table.
