Antique Uzbek Lakai suzani for Shahrizabaz, silk floss on a ivory cotton ground.
Circa 1900/20.
Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding or other special occasion. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt or family home. They are usually embroidered in silk on on a cotton, silk, linen or wool ground. The suzani is often backed with a fine cotton lining to give it strength and body. Suzani can be used in the modern home as wall hangings, bed covers or decorative throws.
This example is woven with silk floss embroidery 'tambour work' on a plain ivory cotton field. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan by ladies of Lakai origin. The suzani would have been used as a bed cover or wall hanging.
The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, there are a few very small historic stains. The suzani is backed with printed Russian cotton, it was re-backed in 2014.
The suzani is ready for display.
