Description

Size: 6ft 0in x 4ft 4in (183 x 132cm).
Antique Persian Heriz or Tabriz silk prayer rug with double column design and saffron yellow above the soft terracotta red field.
Circa 1890.
An antique Heriz or Tabriz silk prayer rug with a faded terracotta red field, the rug has a design closely related to the 17th / 18th century prayer rugs from Ghiordes in Turkey. The two double columns support three pointed arches. The central arch is accentuated by its size and the mosque lamp suspended from its apex. The saffron yellow and ivory ground section of the field above it, with trefoils and delicately drawn plants at its upper end, contains a fine lattice design. A horizontal panel of cartouches provides the upper finish of the field. The wide border is of a classical Persian design and composed of seven bands, the main border in a dark indigo blue.
The rug is in original condition with some wear, heavier in places and some historic small damages to the lower right hand outer border. There is a hanging strip attached to the upper back of the rug.
This is a collectable silk rug ideal for hanging.
