Description

Size: 4ft 4in x 1ft 7in (131 x 47cm).
Antique Uzbek 'napramach' storage bag face.
Circa 1900.
The napramach were used by nomads of Central Asia, whose way of life has been connected with constant moving: on their journeys these bags were used for the transport of their belongings, and when the nomads settled the napramachs became parts of the yurt interior. These bags were given various names throughout central Asia:
• Among Samarkand Uzbeks: napramach, maprach
• Uzbeks from Nurata region: karchin
• Uzbeks-Lakai and Kungrats (Kashkadarja, Surhandarja): mapramach
• Turkmens: mafrach, maprach
• Karakalpaks: maprach, karshin
• Kirghiz: chavadan (the Russian word “chemodan” – a suitcase – originates from this word)
• Azerbaijanians: mafrash
This example from Uzbekistan has two large traditional gul designs separated by a pair of smaller guls to the central panel. The foundation is goats hair and there are plain weave panels at each end.
The bag face is in very good untouched original condition with full pile.
