Size: 8ft 5in x 6ft 6in (257 x 197cm). Antique Uzbek suzani, silk embroidery on a red cotton ground. Circa 1900. Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body. This example has fine silk embroidery in floral designs, on a red cotton ground. It was probably woven in Shar-i-sabz, South Eastern Uzbekistan, near the Tajik boarder, probably Tajik work. The suzani would have been used as a bed cover or wall hanging. The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, the backing is Russian cotton with a floral design, the suzani was re-backed in Kabul in 2006. There is a very small finger tip size spot of damage in the lower left hand corner. The suzani is ready for display. Ref: T-0589. All of our prices include FREE WORLD WIDE EXPRESS DELIVERY by DHL.
