Size: 6ft 5in x 4ft 11in (195 x 150cm). A very good old South Caucasian Shirvan rug, with a design inspired by Seichur palmette rugs from the Kuba region. About 30 years old. A superb example of Shirvan village weaving, rich natural colours and hand-spun wool. This rug was purchased in Azerbaijan about 15 years ago from weavers who had a small but very high quality weaving workshop. The design is usually found on 17th and 18th century Seichur rugs from the Kuba region, but there are also some later examples known that date to the 1st half of the 19th century. This group of rugs are discussed by Ian Bennett in 'Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian', plate 388 page 295. This example has outstanding colour with a floral Seichur border surrounding a ivory field filled with a palmette design. The rug is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile. The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use. A scarce example of modern Shirvan weaving of the highest quality. Stock Number: R-321.
