Description

Size: 2ft 11in x 2ft 8in (89 x82cm).
A scarce Baluch sofreh (eating cloth) these were placed on the ground for food to be served on.
Circa 1880.
This outstanding example was woven by the Timuri tribes of Western Afghanistan, it was woven in two parts on a narrow tribal loom, the field is filled with a tree design in an embroidered technique. The borders are piled, there is a bannd of ivory weftwork decoration across the center of the field. Both ends retain the original kilim end finishes with brocaded decoration.
The sofreh is in good condition with some signs of use, there are a number of small old tribal repairs.
The sofreh is suitable for light domestic use.
The sofreh has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.
This is a scarce and collectible example of tribal Baluch weaving.
