Item Ref
T-0228

Size: 8ft 6in x 7ft 10in (260 x 240cm).

Antique Uzbek Tashkent 'palak' suzani, superb colour and condition.

Circa 1890.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This is an excellent sample of an old Tashkent suzani called palak. This was the only kind of suzani where solar and astral motifs dominate over vegetative ones. According to ethnographical research data, big circles of the traditional palak pattern represent the moon and stars that were believed to provide good health and enhance female reproductive ability.
The whole surface of the piece is entirely embroidered in silk 'basma' couching stitch. Note the bright hue of cochineal red dye.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, there are a few spots of colour run and old staining..

The suzani is ready for display.

ANTIQUE PERSIAN RASHT EMBROIDERY, SILK & FELT ...

Item Ref
T-0857

Size: 7ft 3in x 4ft 9in (221 x 144cm).

Antique Persian Rasht embroidery in silk with felt applique work.

Circa 1880.

Woven in the city of Rasht in Northern Persia on the Black Sea coast, known as Rashti-Duzis they are famed for their intricately embroidered details and borders.
Christies auction house writes as follows: 'From the Safavid period onwards, the city of Rasht in Persia supplied the Safavid courts at Ardebil and Tabriz with highly sophisticated embroideries, known as rasht-duzi textiles. They were executed primarily by professional male embroiderers in well-established workshops, and in the Qajar period served as saddle covers, floor covers and hangings within impressive courtly tents (Wearden, 1991, p.122).

The gul-duzi-i-rasht (stitched inlay) technique was complex and entailed cutting a shape out of the ground fabric and replacing it with a carefully cut fabric of the same shape in a contrasting colour. In order to establish the necessary precision of each piece, Wearden suggests that a sharp instrument was used, much like a biscuit cutter, before the joins were disguised by fine embroidery which also served to refine the details of the design (Wearden, 1991, p.121).

The designs are clearly inspired by Persian medallion carpets. Further Rasht textiles of a medallion design include one housed in the Museum der Kulturen Basel, published in HALI, no.143, 2005, p.114, and one sold at Christie’s, New York, 14-15 December 2015, lot 643'.

This outstanding example has a fine elongated central medallion on aubergine coloured felt, surrounded by a green field. Note the two pairs of beautifully drawn birds surrounding the medallion. The borders are of classical form, with the outer red ground border being an outstanding feature.

The embroidery is in excellent original condition with no repairs. The are some historic signs of use resulting in very small holes to the felt applique and some very slight water marks. The original backing has some water staining.
