Description

Antique Yomut Turkmen 'ok bash' cover for yurt tent poles.
Circa 1880.
Ok bash were decorative covers used by the Turkmen tribes to cover the ends of the long wooden poles or struts, that were used in the construction of the family yurt. During the migration the poles were strapped to the sides of camels and these highly decorative bags covered the ends of the poles.
Ok bash are found in both piled and flat weave, this example by the Yomut Turkmen is in a flat woven brocaded technique, similar to that used on the well known Yomut pallas kilims. Woven as a single piece, it is joined along the base and down one side to create a bag, decorative tassels have then been applied.
Excellent condition with very slight signs of wear through use.
An excellent tribal display item in original condition.
