Antique Ersari Kizil Ayak Turkmen chuval face, of 9 gul format.
Circa 1890.
An excellent example of a Kizil Ayak chuval face, (the back has been removed). Chuval were large storage bags used by the nomads to store goods in; and place around the inside of the yurt, they were also used on the backs of camels to transport goods.
The chuval is of the 9 gul format, with nine large chuval guls on a warm madder red ground, note the rams horns to each central quarter of the guls. The secondary gul is the Kizil Ayak 'tshemtshe' gul. The main border features the Kizil Ayak ram's star or 'gotshak' design. A feature of the chuval is the large elem at the base, this is decorated with a row of large Turkmen flowering trees, the top of which contains a rams horn device.
The chuval face is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile.
The chuval is suitable for normal domestic use and would make an attractive small rug.
