Antique ‘Jail’ Agra carpet in a Timuri Baluch design.
Circa 1880.
It is suggested that these carpets were woven in the prisons of Agra, India during the latter part of the 19th century by prisoners of Timuri origin. The design is identical to carpets woven by the Timuri of western Afghanistan during the 19th century.
The carpet is of almost square size, the colours are wonderful with a richness and depth.
The Carpet is in excellent condition with very slight wear and almost full pile, there is some corrosion to the blacks. The carpet has a dense weave and an almost velvet like pile. This is one of the most outstanding carpets that I have handled in the last 30 years.

The renowned dealer Franses, writes as follows: The Benlian workshop manufactured carpets for the European market in the city of Tabriz during the first half of the 20th century. Edward E Benlian was a London carpet dealer of Armenian descent who maximized his ties to the thriving Armenian community of Tabriz at the beginning of the last century to produce some of the best quality and most sought after Persian carpets of the era. His master weavers included Javan Amir Kizi and Mahmud Ghalicheh. The Benlian designers successfully reinterpreted the classical carpet designs of 16th and 17th century Safavid Persia, simplifying and unifying the iconic patterns and using a lighter, more European-style palette and strong graphic quality that continues to appeal to modern taste.
This outstanding example is of a Safavid vase design on a indigo blue ground, framed by a classical vase carpet border. The carpet has an overall light feel and would grace the finest of rooms. The carpet has an inscribed panel to the center which bears the same inscription as all the other known examples; it translates as follows, 'Hasabe Farmaieshe Jenabe Mula..(in order of Mr ...most probably Mula or spritual leader .)......then many Doa (pray) for the glory and health of the him ....later Sale (year of ) 1304..... 1886'. It is thought that these carpets were woven for use in a mosque.
This is an excellent furnishing carpet of substantial weight, suitable for heavy domestic use, it would be ideal in a dining room or large family room, a good country house carpet.

Antique Indian Agra carpet of 'Ardabil' design.
Circa 1880.
A superb and very finely woven Agra carpet, with the 16 lobed ivory coloured central circular medallion, with lanterns hanging at each end. The dark indigo blue field is covered in linked floral sprays. Each corner of the carpet has a 'quarter' medallion, replicating the central medallion. The Border is a repeat design in soft red and ivory on a dark charcoal ground.
The carpet is a very accurate copy of the Ardabil carpet, now housed in the V & A museum, London. The Ardabil carpet is the oldest surviving dated carpet known, It was made in the town of Ardabil in north-west Iran, the burial place of Shaykh Safi al-Din Ardabili, who died in 1334. The Shaykh was a Sufi leader, ancestor of Shah Ismail, founder of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1722). While the exact origins of the carpet are unclear, it's believed to have been commissioned by the court for the shrine of the Shaykh, which, by the 16th century, had became a place of pilgrimage. The carpet can be dated exactly thanks to an inscription on one edge, which contains a poetic inscription, a signature - 'The work of the slave of the portal, Maqsud Kashani’, and the date, 946 in the Muslim calendar, equivalent to AD 1539 - 1540.

Antique Indian Agra carpet of 'Ardabil' design.
Circa 1880.
A superb and very finely woven Agra carpet, with the 16 lobed ivory coloured central circular medallion, with lanterns hanging at each end. The dark indigo blue field is covered in linked floral sprays. Each corner of the carpet has a 'quarter' medallion, replicating the central medallion. The Border is a repeat design in soft red and ivory on a dark charcoal ground.
The carpet is a very accurate copy of the Ardabil carpet, now housed in the V & A museum, London. The Ardabil carpet is the oldest surviving dated carpet known, It was made in the town of Ardabil in north-west Iran, the burial place of Shaykh Safi al-Din Ardabili, who died in 1334. The Shaykh was a Sufi leader, ancestor of Shah Ismail, founder of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1722). While the exact origins of the carpet are unclear, it's believed to have been commissioned by the court for the shrine of the Shaykh, which, by the 16th century, had became a place of pilgrimage. The carpet can be dated exactly thanks to an inscription on one edge, which contains a poetic inscription, a signature - 'The work of the slave of the portal, Maqsud Kashani’, and the date, 946 in the Muslim calendar, equivalent to AD 1539 - 1540.

These rugs woven by the nomads of Uzbekistan were for use on the floor of the family yurt. The carpet has three vertical rows of six large Ersari octagonal guls; the guls show that the carpet was woven by the Suleyman sub tribe of the Ersari in the Andkhoy region of northern Afghanistan. The carpet is of a very pleasing soft warm madder red colour with the design in dark indigo blue, there is slight abrash at the top end of the carpet with a lighter pink / red colour.
The carpet is in good condition with some wear, heavy in places and medium / low pile, there are a few scatter faded old re-weaves. (Reflected in the price).
